I have saved seeds from the biggest & sweetest honeydew melon I've ever tasted. Is it too late in the year to plant them in the San Joaquin Valley?

I think it is too late now. You should also expect a lot of variation in fruit grown from your seeds. It really is a lot better to buy the seeds from a source you can depend on, if you want the best fruit. Even with the best seed, the culture is going to have a big influence on the flavor of the fruit. Al

Why do you think it's too late, Al? At 90-100 days to harvest, I'm thinking SoCal gardeners can still be bringing in melons in Nov. - says the guy with 100 cantaloupe seedlings at the 2 leaf stage

I'd say put in a few seeds and check it out -- who knows? If we get the type of winter that we got a couple of years back then you could harvest all throughout winter! I am jealous of you! Here in SF Bay Area, even in summer, melons are a hit or miss.

Living in the central valley, where the night time temperature remains high enough to support continued growing, your fruit may indeed ripen, and I stand corrected. Al

Thank you all for the advice. I think I'll try it with a few of the seeds and save the rest for next Spring. Thank you all again. l.marie
