Garrya Elliptica - prune it?

My Garrya has been in the ground here in Berkeley a little over a year now, and seems to like it here. But it is looking pretty rangy. I realize it is meant to be shrubby, but is it o.k. to shape it a bit so it is a bit more like a multi-trunk tree than a wide low bush? When? How? Or does it hate being messed with?

No it does not mind being pruned into a small tree, however it is pretty persistent in producing enough suckers to make it back into a large shrub. Al
