Gophers: Does sulfur work?

I have a gopher problem in my newly landscaped backyard (lots of lovely new plants to eat in nice nursery mix soil). We are in a relatively wild area with lots of gophers in the neighborhood.

I talked with a company yesterday who would come and for a (large) fee treat the yard with sulfur on a regular basis. They say they guarentee that the gophers would not come back, but only if we sign up for the monthly maintenance program.

Has anyone else had experience with this kind of approach? I am considering it only because I am convinced that the trapping will never end, and I don't want to use poison...

Thanks!

Do you mean applications of sulpher-dioxide gas into the tunnels? That's a typical method for gopher extermination. Sprinkling soil sulpher isn't going to do anything.

Unless they give you a written guarantee with a full refund if not satisfied, they are licensed and insured, have been in the business for years, and have good local references, I'd keep looking. Have you asked any of your neighbors for referrals?

Yes, application of sulfur dioxide gas in the tunnels by a licensed and insured company. They guarentee the plants that are in the yard once they start. I'm asking about their references, and will call them all. Just wondering if this ever works.

My neighbors don't have the problem, at least not as much, as they have not added fill to their yards so don't have the yummy soft soil I do...

imo - NOTHING WORKS except wiring underneath the plants you would like to keep, with tough long-lasting hardware cloth, NOT chicken wire.

this advice comes after years of trying everything we ever heard of including ammo. save your money for the hardware cloth - wire the gophers out of one garden bed at a time. sorry! that's just the way it is. (then your neighbors will inherit the problem.)

you can search on different garden web forums for "gophers: i hate, getting rid of, killing", etc. you are not alone.

Thanks. I've started the long task of uprooting all of my plants and putting them in gopher baskets. My lawn will be toast, I'm afraid...

Commercial pest control contractors have available pellets that they inject into closed gopher tunnels that react to moisture and produce a gas that is effective in killing your gophers. New gophers will move in after the gas is gone and so a service contract is a must, but it is effective. Al
