Growing Tomatoes in San Diego - When to start seeds and other ?

I don't live in San Diego, but a good friend does and I want to share my heirloom and hybrid seeds with her so she can try to grow her own tomatoes. My climate here in South Florida is very different from hers, though, and I don't know how to advise her.

For San Diego's climate, when should she start seeds? Should she grow in containers or can she grow in the ground there? Any other advice specific to San Diego or Southern California?

I can send her Brandywine Sudduth, Landis, OTV and Platfoot, Cherokee Purple, Kellogg's Breakfast and Sun Gold. Any of these better for her climate than others?

She lives on a hill close to the pacific ocean in La Jolla.

I live in SD and I use the chart on this website as my guide: http://www.digitalseed.com/gardener/schedule/vegetable.html. It has been working well for me.

I live in a similar San Diego climate and start my tomato seeds indoors in February. Too early and the plants just sit there until it warms up enough for them to thrive. I once had a tomato plant that survived through the winter. Some people start seeds now for a fall/winter crop but it has it be tomatoes that are early or can take the cold. I don't think the winter tomatoes taste as good as the same tomatoes picked in the summer.

Forgot to answer one question. They do fine in the ground unless she has root knot nematodes.
