Salvia chamaedryoides dieback

One of the 4 Salvia chamaedryoides I planted in my front garden looked dead today when I went out to deadhead so it cut it back to a few inches from the ground. The largest stems were still green inside so I think it's not totally dead yet and I'm wondering what the best action to take would be, and why it may have died. I think it's probably either too little or too much water. I have them planted in front of/slightly downhill from a climbing rose that I water deeply every 1-2 weeks depending on how hot it is, so far I haven't directly watered the salivia at all this year. The plants closer to the rose look fine, the one farthest away is the one that died. That makes me think it needs more water, does everyone agree?
