living wall

Need recommendations of plants that make a great living wall...and narrow evergreens (except Italian Cypress) or other trees that stay green year round. We live in the Sacramento area.

I've been recommended photinia, purple hopseed, and elaeagnus by the local nursery.

Our back wall borders a busy-ish street, and on the other side of the street is new construction. It was nice looking at that field while it was still a field but now that it's new houses, we want to block the view from the 2nd floor of the house...YEAR ROUND.

Need suggestions of what to use. I'd also like something that won't spread into the yard very far. I'd like to plant smaller plants in front of the living wall we make and not eat up the yard space.
