I was quite smitten by the Rose of Sharon growing at Gilroy Gardens and wonder how it will grow in the Berkeley (cool foggy summer, mild winter) climate. Is it less than fully deciduous, maybe even semi-evergreen? Does it resent cool summer, or suffer from powdery mildew?

In my neighborhood in Pacifica there's a very large, established Rose of Sharon growing here with a southwestern exposure. It seems very happy. It's fully deciduous, though, which I suspect is why people in the Bay Area tend to prefer other hibiscuses.

Yeah, I mean if you live in Berkeley, I'd just go with Chinese hibiscus and enjoy the fact that you can grow it there. I've seen some huge specimens there. I always think evergreen trumps deciduous.
