Cauliflower in Nor Cal - please share your wisdom for success!

For the first time in my life, I am venturing into growing Cauliflower during this Fall/Winter season. I have 6 seedlings of Cheddar Cauliflower variety (an heirloom type), and just got them in the ground this morning.

From what I've read so far, it's a good crop during Fall and Winter here in SF Bay Area. I wanted to get some tips regarding what to avoid, what type of fertilizer to apply and how to save it from slugs (if such risk is common), etc. By the way, I am growing it organically and would prefer to avoid harsh pesticides etc.

They are growing in the spot where I had tomatoes and cukes during the summer.

Thanks in advance!

Cauliflower is relatively easy to grow. Plant, water and pick! If you get cabbage looper caterpillars, since you only have six plants, you can just go out every day and hand pick them off. If that's too much, then you can spray with BT (bacillus thuringiensis), which is lethal to caterpillars, but not to us!

I use a general purpose organic fertilizer at planting and don't use any extra later. I also mulch around the plants to keep moisture levels even.

If you have snails, use a product called Sluggo, it's safe around people and pets, but once again, lethal to snails!

I'm trying the Cheddar cauliflower myself this fall, so guess we will see how it turns out. Good luck!
