If you don't mind non-blooming grass-like foliage here and there, you can plant them all, and within a few years they should bloom.

I admire you, Al, for potting things up like that. Whenever I do that, I forget to water them and they die.

When you get a richness of bulbs, you can also use the little ones to play with, like growing them indoors in glass beads or colored rocks (with a little fert) or growing them in the crook of an old tree.

WARNING, I developed serious skin blistering after dividing my watsonias earlier this year, as the red, rubbery pulposum had a chemical that I reacted to like poison oak and I kept peeling it away from the new bulbs' basal plates (to allow freer root growth). I strongly suggest gloves if you are handling that part, or at least testing to see if you have any allergic sensitivity. It's only the red sections, not the bulb or leaves, that I've ever reacted to.

I've grown watsonia's for years and I have not noticed this skin issue - lucky me. I don't try to separate the bulbs though - the previous years bulb is still needed and actually separating them will make them less likely to bloom.

When you say red, are we talking about the evergreen variety with the smaller flowers ? I have one like this and it is a sparse bloomer compared to the others, until the clumps became very large anyway...
