Winter color in Northern California? Help!

Hello fellow garden lovers!

I am very happy I found this forum! I live in Northern California (South Bay Area)and am looking for some seeds preferably annuals to add some color and fun to my garden this winter. I would love something with fragrance but I place the most importance on any bright colors as it will be out on my patio, where there is some room in the dirt but also plenty of potted plant areas. I would prefer something that stays fairly short (under 2 feet) and an annual or a bulb I can take out is a must as I find I have a little garden A.D.D. :) Oh I guess I should add, it probably won't get to freezing, but possibly once or twice. Also when should I sow these seeds, it is still pretty warm here.

P.S. I would LOVE to have some cut flowers during winter!

Ok, so basically in order of most wanted aspect: winter bright color, annual, cut flowers, small- although it can take over if it will die in spring (that sounds terrible)

Those marked with an asterisk (*) are good cutflowers. Keep in mind that the best cutflower material is from plants over 2 feet tall.

Ok, I think I have found a few possible choices, my question now becomes where do I buy these. I don't mind online shopping for a good deal!

Sweet peas, Pot marigold, Corn Cockle, DAFFODILS/ NARCISSUS, WILD HYACINTH

I was also considering hellebores but had heard they won't bloom for 3 or 4 years and I switch out and dig up my garden often so if that is true they may not be a good idea for me.

    1. If you want the largest and best selection of seeds and bulbs, I think you have to go on-line. Don't necessarily shop for "deals". Look for best quality and service. Occasionally, you'll find something on sale at the better mail-order or on-line companies. Here's some of my favorites:

    2. There are plenty of hybrid hellebores (Helleborus x sternii) that do well where you are and you can buy them in one-gallon cans already in bloom. They'll continue to bloom year after year.

Helleborus x argutifolius is already budding up for winter bloom in my Berkeley garden, and is easily available at northern California retail and wholesale nurseries. Many of the plants listed are also easily available locally, and if you want plants rather than seed or bulbs, you might consider looking at www.anniesannuals.com, with the nursery in Richmond, Ca and they also do mail order.

I think it needs to be said that some things listed as winter bloomers will need the warmer full sun locations without major frost to bloom in true winter, as well as being planted early enough to get established and be blooming size before the weather gets cold. In general, planting out by late September, and getting the plants in the right sun or shade exposure that is their preference will make a huge difference. some pretty standard fare plants such as flowering ornamental kale, florist cyclamen, pansies, violas, english primroses, etc are standard fare for winter bloom, and will start to become available in the nurseries shortly. I have already seen blooming cyclamen for sale at Home Depot locally.

I might mention that early fall planted bulbs may often bloom as early as late October or November, such as Paperwhite Narcissus and ranunculus bulbs, or Ipheion uniflorum.

Stock, Primrose, and Pink (I find pink the most fragrant) cyclament will give you color and scent in the winter months.

That said, Kniphofia rooperii, Aloe Vanbelenii, Ageratum, primrose, and Aeoniums provide great winter color, but not much scent.
