Clematis issues

I have an 'Henri' clematis planted at the end of my garden path on an obelisk trellis, so far it has been very pretty in the spring and early summer but by late summer it looks rough. I'm wondering if there is something I can do to improve the health of the vine, or if I should replace it with something else - and if so, what?

I've searched for information on clematis problems but nothing seemed to fit what I have. It doesn't seem like clematis wilt, it's just that the leaves look like they are stressed and there isn't much new growth to replace them. I have fairly heavy clay soil, but it's fertile and most things do well. This particular plant is in an odd situation, planted in the middle of a DG pathway, so I'm wondering if that could be the problem.

If I can't improve the conditions so that the clematis will thrive I would rather put something else in, but most vines that are reliable here would be too vigorous for my 7' tall 1' wide obelisk trellis.

Any ideas?

Here's a picture of the spot in spring when it was looking good:
