Rudbeckia Goldsturm

Need a little advice with a judgment call. My very happy clump of Rudbeckia Goldsturm is getting a bit too big for its location. Most advice on dividing the clump says to do it in the early spring, but then again, most of that advice is coming from people and places that experience serious winter. In almost frost free southern California, can I divide the clump now, or should I behave myself and wait till spring?

Late winter worked for me, early February. Then some will pop up in the old location. Seems to come back from nothing.

Indeed, jxbrown, indeed. We're in for it, but not till later this afternoon. (On the other hand, it just started thundering.) Hope it's a long gentle soak, but I'll be happy with whatever moisture we can get.
