Why not consider using a Sasanqua Camellia for fall/winter bloom, or Abutilons or Justia carnea or add other perennials such as Anemone hybrida or foliage accents such as Aucuba japonica variegata. I'm assuming you are dealing with predominant shade or morning sun if you're growing ferns and baby tears.

I have a space like that. I still don't have any idea what to plant there.

If you like orange or pale yellow, you can plant clivia. They bloom in Feb-March. I don't think they will get tall enough, but you could plant two or three to get three feet wide.

I found a compact camellia that I think will work nicely, the lady at the nursery didn't know if it was a sasanqua but she said that it will stay nice and small and many people who've bought them have liked them a lot. It has pink flowers in the fall and doesn't like much sun, so I think it should be happy in the corner of my shady bed.

I have a similar location for foundation planting with a roof overhang of 30 inches. We have three camellias over 50 years old that grew up above the roof. When the roof and gutters needed replacing, I cut two of the camellias down to four feet, and the other one to one foot. All have done well since, blooming every year. I also have a Daphne I keep at about four feet that blooms around Christmas and is very fragrant. We also have a fuchsia magellanica that survives the winter with some frost back, helped by the roof overhang. It recovers in the spring and blooms all summer up until the frost, feeding a lot of hummingbirds, and entertaining us. Al
