| I am looking for an attractive vine for my chimney, which runs the length of my house vertically, and is very visable from the street. My landscaper suggested a purple snail vine but I have read that this vine is very aggressive and can attract ants. Would this be a problem in So. Cal? If anyone has other suggestions, I would appreciate the input.
Thanks! |

| "...which runs the length ... vertically..."? I'm not sure exactly what this means. And how do you plan to support a vine on your chimney? Joe |

| Hmm, if your chimney is brick or rock and has mortar, you may want to avoid planting anything that has little sucker feet or grasping tendrils like ivy or creeping fig. You can use anchors and grow a climbing rose, which would probably look pretty spectacular. If the chimney is stuccoed (sp?) you could grow Boston Ivy on it. That would look gorgeous. Another thing to keep in mind: sometimes it is better not to call attention to an architectural feature with a stunning plant. If you want to minimize the impact of the chimney, a less eye-catching plant might do the job better. In other words, a big green vertical chimney might stand out more than one that is the same color as the house. A few tall shrubs might draw less attention than a rose. Renee ps. I don't recommend the snail vine. |
