fertilize cotoneaster?

We planted several cotoneasters about 5 -7 years ago under a eucalyptus tree. Recently the leaves have started to turn brown, and some the the plants have died.
They're on drip about 8 minutes a couple of times a week.
Should we fertilize them? Have they just reached old age?
What would happen if we were to cut them back?

No fertilizer.

Not yet considered elderly.

But certainly needs more water than 8 minutes several times per week.

Guideline for watering is to thoroughly water the entire rootzone. To test if you've achieved that, put a trowel in the soil to check

Your soil is likely bone dry unless you've had a good rain recently.

I agree with jean. The tree roots are sucking up all the moisture from the soil. Al
