Carpet roses evergreen in Sacramento area?

I'm on our church's landscape committee (lucky me, sigh) and we need to put in a small hedge between a lawn and driveway. The head of the committee insists that carpet roses are evergreen, and he wants to use them. I haven't paid that much attention to carpet roses, but I dont know of any that are "evergreen" in this zone. I think the hedge will be an ugly pile of sticks all winter, but am being ignored. Does anyone in this area know about this, and if there are evergreen varieties, could you tell me which ones? Thanks, Sue

All the Flowercarpet roses in the Zone 14 near me are "semi-deciduous" in the winter. Essentially, they're "scruffy" looking but not totally deciduous. Joe

I would say mine look bad for a month or two, but bloom early and repeatedly IF I keep them watered. Sometimes they look worse in the summer!I am referring to Ralphs Creeper, Moon River, and a pink one; I'm not sure the first wo are technically carpet roses, but they are those spreading "ground cover" shrub roses.

I had a hedge of carpet roses in my backyard and they "thinned out" a little bit in the winter, but stayed green. I had mine planted in semi-shade, though, so that might have made a difference. I thought they looked fine all year long.

I asked the sales rep from Monrovia today and he said it really depends on how cold the winter is and the microclimate where they are planted. In a mild winter and the warmer areas, they would be semi-evergreen (still leafed, but not lush). wanda

Sue: Sounds like you're in Davis, but if you ever get over to Roseville, check out the shrub/carpet(?) roses at the Borders Books center on Douglas. I've always admired them and thought they were exceptionally nice (all the landscaping there is nice). That is a good hint, actually, to check out commercial landscaping that you like elsewhere and copy what you like best. I do think for the Sacramento Area, roses give you *almost* year round payback for very little maintenance.

I had a red one in a southern exposure in the Laguna area of Elk Grove and it stayed nice year round. Was next to the house so was somewhat sheltered. I think the color makes a big difference as my yellow ones (in pots) do not bloom as well and are scruffy looking in the dead of winter. Go with red if you decide to use them.
