I've been planting a fall/winter garden for about 5-6 years now in Zone 9 (Sacramento area) and have not had any issues with frost kill on any of my plantings during that time.

There have been a few nights during these years that it has gotten down to approx. 24F and I have occasionally seen my plants covered with frost, only to be fine later in the day. You would think that the leaf lettuces would be on the delicate side, but apparently not ...

I've planted the Romaine that you've mentioned and also Bibb, Red Sails and many others that I can't think of right now. I've also planted snow & snap peas, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli and various onions and garlics.

None of them have had any issues, but I've noticed that carrots and peas planted from seed often take a long time to germinate in the cold soil; once they emerge, they haven't had problems either.

I wonder how cold it would have to get to hurt these plants?
