Can anyone help me identify this tree? It has beautiful fall color in Northern California and does not seem to have noticeable flowers or fruit.

Some variety of Acer rubrum (red maple)?

Maybe...out here Japanese maples are so common but I've never seen a red maple before. Its vertical habit and smooth bark seem somehow kind of unmaplelike!

Definitely a maple, and unless it's some closely related hybrid, I agree it is probably a red maple. Most of the native North American species grow large and have smooth bark until they are quite old.
