Can anyone help me identify this tree? It has beautiful fall color in Northern California and does not seem to have noticeable flowers or fruit.

| Maybe...out here Japanese maples are so common but I've never seen a red maple before. Its vertical habit and smooth bark seem somehow kind of unmaplelike! |

| Definitely a maple, and unless it's some closely related hybrid, I agree it is probably a red maple. Most of the native North American species grow large and have smooth bark until they are quite old. |
