Based on my years of gardening, starting with a clean slate is often the best way to go.

That's a very interesting plant. The roots appear to be clumps of tubers. I would keep it (maybe in a pot) and see if it flowers, it could be something special like Gloriosa rothschildiana.

The twining vine tendrils and the roots are part of the same plant, and in no way as colorful as a Gloriosa lily, which would never willingly naturalize in a chilly summer winter rainfall location such as San Francisco. Your vine and tubers are an asparagus species, common name is Smilax. Much used by florists for cut greens, and useful for climbing a cyclone fence. Invasive in the way that many of the South African vining species of Asparagus can be, as it germinates readily from bird spread seed and can survive on winter rainfall alone along the coast in California. I'd classify it as a weed to be grubbed out along with the ivy...

It's Asparagus asparagoides, a very common weed.
