help me identify this plant?

This plant was growing in a neglected area at the house in the (coastal) Bay Area that I just moved into. What I know about it:

- About two feet high

- Growing under a plum tree in a fairly shady area with lots of ivy

- Extending itself with a root, sending green shoots up every six inches or so

- No flowers that I've seen

Guesses? Questions?
