Succulents around a fountain

bahia

An exuberant planting of succulents in an Oakland hills garden, around the client's pre-existing fountain. Part of the redesign of the Oakland Hills 1991 Fire Zone garden was to shift things around and add new elements within a very tight space with outstanding views of the bay, but also very exposed to view from the above slope neighbors. Fire safety plant selection was an important element, as well as creating semi-private spaces to hang out protected from nosy neighbors. Tucking the new raised terrace up against the rear property line achieved a degree of privacy while accentuating the distant views.

Succulents of varying types and planted in mass were the finishing touch for this garden, as the clients are fans and supporters of the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, Ca. The Bancroft Garden, for those who don't know of it, is one of the premier succulent gardens of northern California, and open to the public as one of the first Garden Conservancy gardens in the USA.
