Bamboo works well if you contain it with something like Bamboo Guard. It's an enormous amount of work, though, because you have to dig 28" deep to bury the stuff.

Italian cypresses will work too, if it's not too shady there. The problem is when one dies. It looks like a tooth fell out.

Where are you? There are great nurseries all over the state, but it's a big state.
