Pansies, violas and primroses are blooming. The recent freezes knocked out the late flush on the roses but didn't damage the buds on the potted daylily 'Coming Up Roses'. One opened 3 days ago. A pony pac of Dianthus is building buds again. Tender type geraniums were blooming well until the freeze --- just finished cutting away damaged growth --- they are usually my winter mainstay for color (ivy type and felt leaf type). Blooming pots of Cinerarias are showing up at the nursery -- very eyecatching. Ornamental cabbage put in a month or so ago is also eyecatching and loved cold temps.

What isn't blooming that I thought would be: snapdragons and salvias. I think it's too early for Pieris japonica "Temple Bells", a small shrub.

All in all the primroses have the most punch right now.

Winter blooming Aloes are easy, tough, water wise, and the hummingbirds love them. Many of them also have foliage that colors up, making for months and months of color.

My tried and true winter color for the SF bay area uses a lot of annuals such as primrose, calendulas, cyclemen, pansies, ornamental kales/cabbages, and primrose.

To bring is a little contrast along with some flower color I'll use the strappy foliage of cymbidium orchids and match their flower color with the annuals like soft pink orchids with a hot pink or white cycleman .
Or a yellow cymbidium orchid with some purple primrose and white ornamental cabbages.

If anyone loves cyclamen let a flower ripen seed. Very prolific.
