In praise of Crape Myrtles

Is it just me or are the Crapes unusually colorful this year. They are in the most gorgeous fall shades right now. They are planted all over my town and they look like scarlet and orange clouds. I planted a few in my yard this year and my are they gorgeous. The brightest one is Muskogee.

Fall is yet another reason to plant Crapes.

Huh? I thought they've all finished blooming already...

I sorta like them especially for the long blooming season. But the flowers can be quite messy.

It is the color of the fall foliage. Those with the Indian names do have the most color in the fall and is another reason for planting them, besides their resistance to mildew. Al

It's been the best year for fall foliage color around here for years and years. Must have been the early rain, relatively few Santa Ana spells, then the sudden chill.

Here is a link that might be useful: pictures of fall foliage color around here

Thanks dis and Al- I pointed out the crape myrtles to my DH today and sounded so knowledgeable when he asked why some were red and others just turned brown. "Well," says I, "it's because the red ones have Indian names." He looked at me with an expression that I have chosen to interpret as awe, since his mouth was hanging open in disbelief.

Hoovb :

I've been think this year has been unusually colorful myself. In a separate post I put up pictures of one of my planes that colored remarkably but I'm noticing other planes also looking especially beautiful. The bright orange-gold is stunning on the giant ones.

There is one street near me that is lined with a mix of Crapes, Chinese Pistache, Sweetgum, and Planes. It looks like a fireworks show.
