Anyone growing Black Magic, Sawada's Mahogany, or Drama Girl Var.

| A local nursery supposedly has these in stock, according to their inventory list. I have a small 'Drama Girl' and know that's a winner for outlandish blooms. But I have never seen 'Drama Girl Variegated.' Does the flower have a nice pattern? Some variegated flowers I like, but some I think look "sick."
I have seen photos of 'Black Magic' and I suspect that would be a winner for me. The color looks unusual. I suspect the same about Sawada's Mahogany.
I don't really NEED any more Camellias - LOL - but I always seem to wind up with a few more each season. My latest acquisition is 'Fashionata.' I was very pleased to see that the partially open flower buds on this variety still look okay after a couple of nights with temps. around 19F-20F in my garden. Even if those have slight damage, the unopen buds should be fine. |

| Yes, they all produce sensational blooms that are seldom found in any retail nursery, and are highly sought after among exhibitors, but also grow well in the garden. You would love all of them. And be sure to compliment the nursery owner. It must be a special place. |

| I just bought Sawada's Mahogany and Drama Girl at Hanna's Nursery in B'ham a few weeks ago. Still haven't got them in the ground yet. I'm wondering what the size and habit of SM is. I hear that DG is kind of loose and sprawling. |

| Yes Drama Girl is a very strong grower, once established. It grows several inches a year, and it gets very big very quickly. Sawada's Mahogany is one I don't have, but the ones I have seen are more compact and average height. You may call Bobby Green who found it on the old Sawada homesite and named it. I am sure yours came from him. It is strikingly different. You may see some good examples of these at the Bham Camellia show on Feb. 12-13 at BBG. |

| Phillip, Hannah's inventory list is where I saw these mentioned. Sounds like I need to head down there and get a Camellia fix! LOL. Forrest, thanks for the info. I am almost certain that at least Saw. Mahog. and Black Magic are from Green Nurseries. Fortunately, a few of our local nurseries in Birmingham have started stocking their Camellias. I wish they would stock their entire selection. Or maybe I don't, because I would be broke! |

| Dave, doesn't Hanna's have their Black Magic spelled with a "j" (Majic)? I couldn't find that particular variety in their greenhouse and it was one that I was specifically looking for. Since I was getting "Sawada's Mahogany" though, I figured that the colors would be similar and settled for it. |

| I planted fashionata last year and am glad to hear that about the buds. I was looking at my camellia bed last week and most buds on my 15 or so japonicas are all brown. I was very disheartened to see all my camellias looking that way! And all are covered with buds. Nothing has bloomed yet but I thought the tall pines and no morning sun would help. I've been looking forward to those blooms all year. |
