Here's another Feb Camellia in the PNW. Is this a hybrid?

Its hard to tell from a distance. But this may be the solid red form of the 'Gov Mouton' you previously posted. I zoomed in and the leaves seem to match, but it was hard to tell about the bloom from a side angle. To be sure you would need to compare the form of the two blooms and their leaves. If so, its registered name is camellia japonica 'Aunt Jetty.' From the size of the trunks, these plants seem to have been around a long time and are happy there in the pacific northwest. What else do you grow?

'professor sargeant' could also be a possibility.
the flowers would be about 2.5" or so, judging by the ones i see in my area.

Forrestal: BC-PNW Camellias

I can really only notice Camellias but I can only name a few. They only grow along the west coast when we are talking Canada.

1 Pink Camellia in western Canada:

2 This type flowers later but is really exotic. Probably the nicest one in the PNW:

3 Big flower on this shrub:

4 Otome (I hope that's correct):

5 Close shot of red specimen:

These Camellias can take the long Canadian winter nights but only on the west coast. Some don't like summer sun so I imagine that So Cal is too sunny for them. I thought the Gulf Coast was too warm for Camellias.

Cheers

Its interesting about the climatic differences. Yes we can grow camellias very nicely on the gulf coast. Our climate and soil are well suited and similar to the native habitat of camellias in China. But I often envy the long summer days of the PNW because camellia buds are enhanced by longer photo periods. And likewise the longer nights in winter help them open more fully (camellias are nocturnal bloomers). Camellias are so interesting, each plant almost has its own personality.
