Camellias in Zone 6 (Utah)?

stevation

I moved to Utah (Zone 6) five years ago, and I've often missed my Camellias from Sacramento. I just saw something in a catalog about "Ice Angel" Camellias that are hardy in zone 6. Has anyone out there grown them, especially the 'Spring's Promise' variety?

I know I would have some challenges with my alkaline soil here, but I do have some Japanese maples that are growing fine (though I've had some others that died, too!).

Anyway, do you think they're really fine in zone 6? Would they need to be in a protected spot or covered during deep freezes? Would they really flower from January to March, even in the snow? Sounds too good to be true!

I look foward to reading your insights. Thanks!
