C.j. 'Mabel Bryan' sporting....

My plant just opened its first flowers this season, the other day, and one of them is solid red! I know its not at all unusual for certain taxa to exhibit a color change, its just that I've had it several years and its never sported before. Anyone else had a MB do this? I was just checking Stirling Macoboys Camellia Encyclopedia and he mentions a sport called 'Mabel Bryan Strawberry'. Very neat! Has anyone had other camellias produce sports?

hey alan,
yes, mine did, if this is indeed 'mabel bryan'.
it is one of the last camellias that i purchased at a box store garden center and this is the first (and apparently only one) flower that it will have since i bought it.
does the form look right to you?
i also bought 'la peppermint' this year in flower and one branch has solid red flowers, but i think this is a trait of the cultivar.

That looks just like mine Jeff. I bought mine at HD, so its always possible it was mislabeled. The "normal" flowers do have the nice striping pictured for MB in Macoboys book, so I think for once they sold a plant true to name. My plant didn't bloom last year, but it has five or six open flowers at the moment, one being red. 'La Peppermint' is a great name. Thats what I think everytime I see white flowers striped with red.
