| My plant just opened its first flowers this season, the other day, and one of them is solid red! I know its not at all unusual for certain taxa to exhibit a color change, its just that I've had it several years and its never sported before. Anyone else had a MB do this? I was just checking Stirling Macoboys Camellia Encyclopedia and he mentions a sport called 'Mabel Bryan Strawberry'. Very neat! Has anyone had other camellias produce sports? |

hey alan, yes, mine did, if this is indeed 'mabel bryan'. it is one of the last camellias that i purchased at a box store garden center and this is the first (and apparently only one) flower that it will have since i bought it. does the form look right to you? i also bought 'la peppermint' this year in flower and one branch has solid red flowers, but i think this is a trait of the cultivar.

| That looks just like mine Jeff. I bought mine at HD, so its always possible it was mislabeled. The "normal" flowers do have the nice striping pictured for MB in Macoboys book, so I think for once they sold a plant true to name. My plant didn't bloom last year, but it has five or six open flowers at the moment, one being red. 'La Peppermint' is a great name. Thats what I think everytime I see white flowers striped with red. |
