The Williamsii Hybrids

We've had a 'Donation' growing out in the pines since around 1980. It's in full bloom now. A couple of years ago, I discovered a 'Donation' seedling growing in the mulch at the foot of the plant. Is this unusual? I thought I had read somewhere that the Williamsii hybrids were sterile. Does anyone have enough experience with them to comment on this? After growing the seedling in a pot for a season or two, I planted it last fall, and it is also in bloom--medium-sized, semi-double, down-facing pink bells with stamens. When the plant attains a little height, it should be pretty in the landscape.
