Camellia Japonica Eleanor McCown & Carter's Sunburst

Hi, I just bought some beautiful camellias. However, I'm new to these plants. The label said filtered sun, what exactly does that mean? Will they survive and thrive in full-sun? I believe the area that I plan on putting them will have a lot of afternoon sun. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sasanquas can take more sun than japonicas. However, afternoon sun results in more winter foliage burn in zone 7-a.

Hello Millie:
You have been to Pike's, haven't you? I saw that Carter's Sunburst the other day and couldn't pass it up myself!

Filtered sun would be like that found under pines. The camellias that I planted under deciduous trees all tend to be sunburned by the spring.

I have found, as Steve says, that sasanquas have little difficulty with full sun, even afternoon sun, but the japonicas (like the sunburst) really don't like it. They will burn and look unhappy all summer. Give it some cover from the full sun and winter winds and it should repay the effort!

I did go to Pike to get these plants and it turns out the spot I put them in gets a lot more shade than I thought it would. The plants seem to be thriving at this point...I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Hello Millie:

I absolutely love Pike's selection of camellias! I have had to stop going there....

I'm so glad that they are doing well; shade and mulch seem to always do the trick!
