pruning camellias

Will it hurt a camellia to prune it "bonsai" style. By that I mean so that you can see a trunk at the bottom and trained to look like a tree instead of a bush? It is probably a 15 year old bush that was trimed into a square block by the previous owners and I don't like the look. Thanks.

RE: pruning camellias

they take pruning well. i have pruned some of mine to the same shape that you describe. i like to see the trunk, myself, and take off the lower branches that hang to the ground on a few of my japonicas. i also remove some of the weaker, interior growth on occasion.
