Can camellia japonica be grown in zone 10?

Yes another zone denial question. Is here a variety of camellia japonica that will grow well and flower with a low temperature of 70 degrees and a high of 84? I read somewhere they were evergreen and I have had good success with evergreen daylilies and antique roses. Suggestion appreciated.

The 84Âº would be ok, but I think the low of 70Âº might be a problem. I think(but not sure) that they need cooler night tempertures to develop the buds properly. It's sort of the same reason that lilacs won't bloom in the Deep South. However, the bush is evergreen and it would look good even if it never bloomed. It certainly is worth a try. Make sure that the soil is somewhat acidic and drains well.

There are camellia species from tropical Asia, which may grow well in Zones 10 and 11. Stirling Macoboy's _Illustrated Encyclopedia of Camellias_ has good color illustrations and detailed descriptions of the tropical camellia species.
