Can anyone tell me when the grafting of camellias began?

I am not sure that this is your intended answer.

Very ancient time, man discovered two branches was compacted together for a long time and the branches grafted together naturally.

That's more information than I have now. I appreciate your answer and I believe that would qualify as grafting. Any dates?
