recommendations for a hedge/entryway

| Hi there-- I would like to frame a narrow walkway with two camellias, one on either side, and train them to form a fairly informal low arch through which one can pass. I'd like them to be relatively fast growing, and white. Since I live on the colder edge of Zone 7 I have been looking at sasanquas and the cold hardy hybrids. So far I have thought about 'Mine no yuki' (sasanqua and the hybrid 'Winter's snowman.' The bushes would have to be planted fairly close together- say, 6 feet-- so I was worried that "Mine' might be too spreading. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks! Hobbes |

| Another alternative to consider is C. sasanqua 'Daydream' which is rapid growing and upright, but then spreading at the top. Very strong and hardy. It will give you the arch effect sooner than 'Mine No Yuki.' The blooms are white with light pink edges. I might add that 'Mine' is much more floriferous and dramatic in bloom. It is indeed more spreading, but you can train it with pruning. |
