April Dawn camellia question

Hi all,

I am a relatively new gardener but have been "bitten hard by the bug".

I have a gorgeous April Dawn camellia in the front of my house which we planted 4 years ago. I bought it at a very reputable local nursery, although the plant itself was not marked. The thing flowers profusely each Spring (is in full bloom outside my kitchen window as I write this).

From the first time it bloomed, there were a few sporadic pink flowers amidst the white with slight pink veining typically seen with April Dawn. With each subsequent early Spring rebloom, I am noticing more of the solid pink flowers and am just curious as to what is the cause of this? They are beautiful, mind you, and I love the look of the mixed coloration on one plant (sometimes along the same branch). I was just wondering what accounts for this.

Thanks for any info you can offer up.

RE: April Dawn camellia question

Hello, BC. April Dawn is a well known camellia that often sports. These occasional sports can be full pink blooms; half white and half pink; and anything in between... It is common for other camellia varieties to sport as well. In some cases, the plant's DNA may not be stable and in other cases, there may be a plant virus causing the sport; usually, it is the latter.
