I have some Camellia sinensis seeds, and i tried to get one to germinate, but all it did was get a little moldy. And it took over 2 weeks to do that. I would like to know what the care requirements for germination are. And i would really like to know how long they take to germinate.

RE: How long till germination?

Camellia are a little fussy about seed propagation. Seeds need to be harvested after the pods ripen and are practically ready to crack open and release them. The seeds should be sown immediately after harvesting. This occurs sometime in the fall for most camellia.

Here is a link that might be useful: seed propagation of camellia

Most of home gardeners do not have professional equipment for seed germination. You can keep seeds in a ziplock bag in refrigerator. Grow it when weather is warm. I even use microwave to kill any pest in the potting mix.

There are many ways to germinate seed. why not try the simple one first?

I now have seeds sprouting after about 4 weeks on top of the refrigerator. They were collected from my bushes and I cracked the hard black coat off of them after shelling them out of the green outer coat. This can be done with a nutcracker but be careful or you will split the seed. Once the coat is cracked you can carefully pick the coat off with your fingernail. They were placed in a baggie filled with standard potting soil and kept moist. I also planted some in the ground but so far have not seen any sign of germination. I think the warmth is key to early germination.
