Would you return this plant?

Dear All
I am a newbie to camelias. Last fall I bought japonica "Nuccio's Gem". I live near Dallas TX. We had an unusually warm Nov. and First week in Dec. Then it dropped about 70 degrees in one day and had a hard freeze.

I had buds all over 2. Yes they froze, but this plant was set to bloom later and put on buds twice. They turned brown and died before ever opening. The leaves have rust colored dots on many of the. Do you think this is a fungal problem? It is putting on pretty fresh leaves now. If you had this plant with this problem, would you take advantage of the no questions asked and return the plant or try again this winter.

If fungus, what should I do?

thank you
cynthia

RE: Would you return this plant?

First, I think it's awful to return plants, which are killed, or damaged, by an act of Mother Nature, i.e., a winter freeze, to the retailer with the expectation of a refund. It is not the retailer's fault that the plant froze. Refunding, under such circumstances, simply causes the retailer's cost of doing business to rise. And those types of business expenses are, as you know, passed on to the rest of us.

Second, if the camellia is leafing out lustily, it's probably going to be just fine. You will need to water it during dry spells until it's established.

thank you for your response. I have never returned a plant before. I purchased from this retailer at a higher price because they "sold" on the basis of the refund policy if there is any reason that a purchaser is unhappy with the plant.

This is my first experience with Camelias. I've seen them at a nearby arboretum but read that they are temperamental or diesase prone.

I returned to the retailer and asked why might be wrong. I took a leaf. I was told it was probably fungus. I asked what I should do and was told and that if I was unhappy with the plant I should return it.

I was hoping to learn from this forum if this is a common problem with this variety and if I would need to treat in some manner.

I really do not want to return a good specimen. Likewise, I trusted this nursery to sell a variety that is favorable for my area. If this one is not, then I will return / exchange it for a plant that is.
thank you
cynthia
