Camellias for San Diego

Hello everyone-

My 1st posting on GW! I'm looking for suggestions for a camellia in San Diego Zone 10. I don't live inland where it can get pretty hot in the summers. I live about 4 miles from the coast so my summer temperatures top off at about 80 degrees. It is very dry and arid in the summer.

I have a section in front of my house where I'd like to plant a camellia. The bed is about 4 feet by 2 feet right next to the lawn on the southeast corner. It gets morning sun until about 9 or 10 am and then it is shady. Protected from hot Santa Ana winds also.

I'd like a pink/hot pink or bright red camellia to grow to about 5 feet in that little corner. I've done some light research, but I'd like to know if anyone has had super great luck with any special type of camellia in San Diego. I want the camellia to flourish (hopefully).

For local information such as you are requiring, you might want to visit some of the local garden centers. I do not mean the big box stores, which are absolutely worthless when it comes to relating regional information. Find the locally owned places and talk to the staff.

I have purchased camellias at the Evergreen Nursery on Black Mountain Rd. (and at a Costco road show also...) My planting conditions are simliar to yours, although one site I was convinced would get too much sun. They are thriving!!

They're pretty easy. Walter Anderson's has a nice selection. They have a nursery in Poway and one in Pt. Loma. They won't sell you anything that won't do well in your area and they are very knowledgeable.

There is a guy at the Walter Andersen's Poway store who LOVE's camellias. He orders all different varieties for SD. I am sorry I forgot his name. He would be happy to guide you to the right plant
