Vole problem

| I've just gotten started with camellias and planted my first one in the front yard near some azeales. I have a lot of voles and moles in my front yard. The moles have nearly ruined the lawn, and the voles killed a couple of the large azaleas with their tunnels. It took them two years to completely kill my new little camellia -- two years of circumnavigating the root system (and my replanting) and then two days after the most recent replanting, completely knawing the trunk clear through (looked like an underground beaver at work).
So now I've just brought home a new camellia that I want to plant in the same spot. I also bought "Vole Block", a sharp and crunchy material that you put in the planting hole. Have any of you had similar problems with voles? What did you do? Any other recommendations to deter these critters? Thanks. |

| I do not (knock on wood) have voles in this part of Texas but hawks, owls, shrikes, snakes, weasels, raccoons, foxes, opossums and house cats all feed on voles. You can try to build a habitat for these predators. A multi-faceted approach that uses several vole control methods (rodenticides, repellents, vole block, predators, etc) is probably your best bet. Good luck, Luis |

| Keep mulch away(except during coldest weather). |

| Here is one solution to consider. Find a "proper size" of rust resistant metal mesh in hardware store. Shape it into at least 5 gal size bucket. Plant the camellia in the mesh bucket in ground. The vole might only damage part of the root at outer root zone later, but not all the root. |

| Try the Castor Oil spray for moles that seems to work for me for a few weeks after application |
