leafless branches, when to prune?

My camellia is kinda spindly and small. On one side the branches are leafless. I'm not sure if this is winter damage, deer eating it, or what. It should have been protected from deer so I don't' think that is the problem.

Should I prune out those bare branches now, wait until later, or not at all?

I would wait and see if they leaf out on their own but if the branches are dead, you can cut them now.

As usual, Luis gives good advice, and I agree. One way you can test if smaller branches are dead is to gently bend them to see if they will bend or snap. Gently is the key word here!

But the best method is to just watch and wait for new leaves.
