Need basic info...new to camelia gardening

I live in NE Florida and built a pool w/ screen last year. The builder brought in generic fill dirt around the area and I made a flower bed around the screen about 3' wide and 20 feet long. About 2/3 gets morning sun, the rest pm sun.I did nothing to the soil and planted gardenias which have been a disaster. I had the soil tested and was told it was too compact. So I pulled out the gardenias and worked in some "organic soil conditioner". Am now trying to figure out what to plant and am considering camelias. Any ideas about whether they will do well and any specific varities well suited for my zone? Recommendations on a good nursery for these plants would be appreciated too.Thanks.
