Correct, it will not do well planted outside in the garden during winter. You will have to grow it in a pot using acidic potting mix or a "regular" non-acidic potting mix that you ammend with garden sulphur, iron chelated liquids, fertilizers for acidic plants, etc. To bloom its best, it will need a few hours of sun or it will need to be in a 'bright' location. The soil needs to be watered again when the soil is almost dry. Fertilize monthly and keep it away from windy locations (heating or a/c vents).

An alternative: I have not tried this but you could consider putting the pot outside (dig a hole) during the warm months but bring inside when the cold weather nears.

Unfortunately, the camellia will not be winter hardy in your zone. They are winter hardy down to zone 7 (zone 6b with some protection). If I were you, I would keep it containerized and keep it outside when conditions permit (should be okay outside in a container when minimum temperatures stay above 38-40 F.). They should get some protection from the strongest sun. Try to find a very cool location for it when it comes inside (an un/under-heated but frost-free location is ideal).--Before I had a backyard, I would grow mine in an unheated "Florida" room where the temps stayed in the 50's-60's in the winter. As the above poster writes, they are acid-loving (you can buy fertilizer for acid-loving plants at your local nursery). (I also recycle my coffee grains on these plants in the garden for the acid.)
