What's wrong with my camelia?

Posted by wannagrowit 8 (My Page) on

We moved into a new home last June. The landscaping included a camelia in the front landscaping bed. Just over a year later, the plant has about 20 leaves and they are yellowish in color and kind of spotted. I recently moved the plant as I was afraid it was getting too much water and possibly too much sun. Should I prune it back, or leave it alone? Fertilize? Please help. Thanks.

Can you post a picture of one leaf (top and bottom), wannagrowit? There are some pests that suck the juices of leaves (from the bottom) and leave them looking spotted from the top; these could be the problem. It could also be a case of leaves suffering from iron chlorosis.

If the soil feels wet when you insert a finger to a depth of 4" then the plant is getting too much wet (provided the sprinkler did not recently go off or it rained moments before).

Turning spotted yellowish colors is also not a symptom of too much sun but it would be fine to provide shade starting at 11am - 12pm'ish.

No need to prune or fertilize this late in the summer. Just concentrate on getting a good diagnosis of the problem instead.

Luis

PS - If you cannot post a picture, take a few samples and put them in a sealed plastic bag to a local nursery and see if they can diagnose it for you. An Agriculture Extension Service or a local Camellia Club can also help.

RE: What's wrong with my camelia?

Hello There,
I am a new bee joined this group hoping i could find some solution to the problem I have growing camellia. I brought a healthy looking bush type camellia with a lot of buds in last June. I planted it in my garden where there is a lot of shade. It has been more than 2 months, but there is no improvement in the plant. it is not dead but not a single new leaf or any bloom. I see all the previous buds are just the way they were before. Is it normal? or am I doing something wrong?
I live southern calfornia. I think my zone is 9B or 10A I am not very sure. The camellia is planted in location where it gets 1-2 hours of max sun and enough water. I did add fertilizer once or twice.(I am afriad if I add more it might kill the plant).

Any suggestions would be helpful.

vmanthapuri, Only two months? There is always a time for adjustment, after transplant. If the plant's leaves look no deterioration, you have done a fair good job. You need to grow it for two years to get the plant well established with the ground. Make sure that water is getting into the root ball.
Now the plant is possible in stationary mode about new growth but the size of the flower buds shall be getting larger slowly, ready for bloom in late Jan and Feb at your area..

Camellias usually grow new sets leaves in Spring. Depending on the variety, they may grow 1-2" in a whole year (or more if you have one of the varieties that grows more rapidly). Most just grow slowly so basically, they appear to you as slow because of something you did or did not do. And they make you wonder if something is wrong. But like longriver said, everything is fine. Check the American Camellia Website for more information.
