Newbie...please help with my camellia plant

Hello,
Please help me out with my camellia plant. I have recently acquired a liking to take care of my plants and yards (gardener was not good...just did the lawns and nothing else).
My camellia plant is 4 years old and it's dying. I have read a a few things about how to take care of the plant but am still not sure as to what is causing my plant to die. I would appreciate your diagnoses of it's ailment. I have attached a picture which might aid you in helping me.

Thanks for all the interesting information and advise here. I hope to acquire a green thumb slowly and surely by hanging out here.

| I forgot to mention that the plant is "camellia sasanqua yuletide" and it's located in Southern California (zone 9/10). The branches and leaves are dry and brittle. Few leaves are green. I cannot tell you how it has been taken care of until now but from now it is going to be my responsibility. After discovering this website, I have fired the gardener and will be taking care of everything myself so I will deeply appreciate all input for you. Thanks,
