Growing under hackberry trees

Most of my camellias are planted beneath a large grove of hackberry trees - not the ideal choice I know - but the camellias seem to be okay - and I don't really have any other option. This time of year the trees drop some type of sticky residue that covers my camellias and other plants in the vicinity. What exactly is this residue and is it dangerous to the plants? This might be a better question for the Trees forum.

RE: Growing under hackberry trees

I strongly suspect that you have an infestation of the wooly hackberry aphid. They are very active right now in many parts of Alabama and elsewhere. Hackberry is also host to other piercing/sucking insects, as well. All excrete copious amounts of a sticky, sugary residue...this is the primary reason people complain about these trees.
