Growing under hackberry trees

Most of my camellias are planted beneath a large grove of hackberry trees - not the ideal choice I know - but the camellias seem to be okay - and I don't really have any other option. This time of year the trees drop some type of sticky residue that covers my camellias and other plants in the vicinity. What exactly is this residue and is it dangerous to the plants? This might be a better question for the Trees forum.
