camellias in DC suburb?

I would like to plant camellias in my front yard. I live in Maryland in the DC suburbs. I have a moderately shady well protected front bed. I have seen camellias in the garden stores. What are my chances of success? Any particular cultivars I should try? I would also like to try gardenias and hydrangeas with them.

The Camellia Society of the Potomac Valley has a nice website that lists suitable varieties and has great cultural information. For some reason, they don't list my favorite Ackerman hybrid "Winter's Fire". Winter's Fire is a large red single-flowered hybrid that blooms in the fall. Good luck :-)

I bought 2 winter star (1 gal), 1 April blush and 2 April Dawn (1 qt). We'll see how it goes! Thanks.

i have grown 2 varieties from benkees for 5 years with no problem and I must be a zone lower than you. stick with ackerman's varieties if you are worried
