problems with jean may

| Our landscaper planted two Jean Mays 5 years ago and they are still very, very small. They are in the front yard which is south facing and gets sun for most of the day. We are in Northern California. There are not very many blooms and the leaves are very light and in the summer, seem to burn easily. There is space between them for another plant and am wondering if there is another sasanqua that could do better there. From the other posts in the forum, Kanjiro's growth habit would be perfect for the space and I think tht color would complement the very light pink of Jean May well but the height is too high. Is it possible to keep Kanjiro to something like 3-4 feet with pruning or is that a waste of time? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance. |

If the camellia leaves are burning easily then you need to either (a) figure out a way to provide some shade in the afternoon (specially suring summer) or (b) transplant the camellias to another location. Kanjiro has an upright growth habit so you might be able to keep it around 4 or 5' (height and width). Three feet is doable at first when it is young but after 10-20 years it may be difficult to keep it that small. |

| If you identify and correct the reason for the poor condition of the camellias already there then 'Shishigashira' might have the color and habit you are looking for. |
