New to Camellias...

I just got my first; :-) A Kramers Camellia, which I'm waiting impatiently for enough cold to kick off the show. Which is ironic considering that I have to bundle up insanely to go out and check on it. (It's not that cold here.. I'd just do better as a semi-tropical, lol)

Because of limited garden space and funds, I'm only going to be able to add a a rate of a couple a year, with the goal of replacing the "funny looking bushy things" that came with the house with the camellias. When all's said and done I would like to have five of them as the center strip of the garden, with a row of short annuals in the front, and my climbing roses eventually framing the front windows.

Currently the 'theme' has been red, pink and purple with white accents, so Camellias will fit right into that.

I haven't decided whether I'm going to go all red, or red/white or red/pink. The pink would have to be a more intense one though.

Any suggestions would be great!

RE: New to Camellias...

I have a collectors flair for color combos and themes, which in my case means, I'm terrible! I have noticed this year, mainly because the cold has held off long enough, that I did pretty well with a row of three particular camellias. It turns out that the three combine well and, to be honest, it was more luck than plan.

I have Kanjiro, Apple Blossom and Snow Flurry all in a row. Kanjiro is dark pink, AB is white with pink edges and SF is white. The AB in the center picks up colors from both of the others. Here is a shot of all three from Nov. 24......

Kanjiro is on the end closest to the camera and at the time of the picture had fewer open flowers than the others.

I plunge into things without much thought of how well one plant goes with another most of the time, but every now and then I get lucky. My advice is, plant what you like best and enjoy!
