How long can Camellias stay indoors?

Hi. I plan to grow sasanquas in pots which I will place in the ground. In the fall, when they start blooming, which is usually pretty late here in Philly, I would like to bring them indoors while they bloom. I keep the pots on a tray of gravel, mist them every day, and have a humidifier in the room. But I have central, forced air heating.

My question is, under these circumstances, how long can I keep them inside?

Thanks

Good question, ezlivin1. Camellias do better if planted outside. But if your room can duplicate the conditions in conservatories or greenhouses where they are also grown, then they definitely may last until spring.

PS - You may want to hang a dial hygrometer to measure the relative humidity in the room. Make sure they get the necessary amount of sunlight too.

Camellias can be kept inside indefinitely, given enough light, adequate humidity, and cool night temps (all of which are hard to achieve in the average home). What you do have to realize is that if you DO keep your shrub inside for more than a few days, it won't remain acclimated to outside winter temps. If the growth buds (the smaller ones behind the flower buds) begin to break dormancy while the plant is inside, those will be killed if subjected to any frost at all for the rest of the winter. So if you keep it inside for more than a couple of weeks, you're probably commiting to keeping it inside all winter.
